Ruimte voor de rivier.
In 2000 heeft het kabinet het standpunt Ruimte voor de Rivier gekozen als uitgangspunt voor een nieuwe aanpak
tegen hoogwater. In plaats van verdere dijkverhoging en dijkversterking wordt er gekeken naar de mogelijkheden
om water meer ruimte te geven, bijvoorbeeld door uiterwaarden te verlagen, dijken landinwaarts terug te
plaatsen, of plaatsen of gebieden te reserveren die in tijd van hoog water gebruikt kunnen worden om water
tijdelijk op te vangen. Op de site zijn alle mogelijke projecten te bekijken (o.a. opzoeken via postcode).

Ecologisch
herstel Maas.
Om te onderzoeken welke mogelijkheden er zijn om de rivier haar natuurlijke karakter weer enigszins terug te
geven is het onderzoeksproject Ecologisch Herstel Maas in het leven geroepen. Met informatie over het
onderzoek, beheer en beleid.

European Centre for River Restoration (ECRR).
ECRR supports the development of river restoration as an integral part of sustainable water management
throughout Europe ensuring that projects will be more cost effective, more likely to succeed, and will
encompass multifunctional objectives. It also encourages the application of river restoration technology to
routine management activities to promote sustainable and wise economic 'use' of rivers.

Netherlands Centre for River Studies (NCR).
NCR is a cooperation of the major developers and users of expertise in the Netherlands in the area of rivers,
with a view to (a.o.) achieving a rivers expertise potential of sufficient breadth and depth in the
Netherlands, in order effectively to meet societal requirements, both nationally and internationally. NCR has
come about as a result of renewed societal interest in rivers, in particular concerning the transport of
water, ice and sediment (protection against flooding), transport over water (accessibility) and nature
preservation, recovery and development (quality of life).

Restoration.
Restoration - the return of a degraded ecosystem to a close approximation of its remaining natural potential -
is experiencing a groundswell of support across the United States. The number of stream, river, lake, wetland
and estuary restoration projects grows yearly.
